Bets: 3 Weeks to go, & Trump Ascending to Favorite

Image
Just 22 days from Election Day, Republican Donald Trump is the betting favorite over Kamala Harris 54.1%-44.9%. Six times the favorite has changed since the vice president became the clear choice of Democrats in the wake of President Joe Biden quitting. The latest difference is the largest since the first of those shifts. “We are going to defeat Kamala Harris, and we are going to usher in a new golden age of American success for citizens of every race, religion, color, and creed,” Trump said on social media Sunday. Harris, campaigning Sunday in North Carolina, told her audience, "As president it is my pledge to you that I will always fight for all the American people, and together we will build a brighter future for our nation." Trump has a 20-point platform , led by a return to enforcement of securing national borders. He chastises the Democrats for inflation that at 2.4% remains higher than when he left office in January 2021, yet is considerably lower than the 9....

The offer includes tuition and fees, as well as housing, meals, books, and other educational expenses for students who are admitted to the university. Just days after the University of Wisconsin agreed to a deal that some regents said “sold out minority students,” the university is promising a free education for Wisconsin’s native American tribes. The university said the Wisconsin Tribal Educational Promise will cover the costs for students who are “enrolled members of federally recognized Wisconsin Indian tribes.” “As a university, we are deeply committed to a future of mutual respect and cooperation with the American Indian tribes in Wisconsin,” UW-Madison Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin said. “This program is another tangible, meaningful step in that direction.” The offer includes tuition and fees, as well as housing, meals, books and other educational expenses for students who are admitted to the university. There are about 650 students at UW-Madison who belong to an India...

Ousted McCarthy Won't Run Again for Speakership

Image
Just hours after being voted out of his leadership position, former U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said late Tuesday he would not run for the position again. The House of Representatives voted 216-210 earlier in the day to vacate the speakership, leaving the position open and likely kicking off a marathon of votes to replace or reinstate California Republican Kevin McCarthy. "I believe I can continue to fight, maybe in a different manner," McCarthy said Tuesday night, after the vote. "I will not run for speaker again. I'll have the conference pick somebody else." A handful of House Republicans joined Democrats to oust McCarthy Tuesday afternoon, despite McCarthy telling reporters earlier that he expected to survive the proceedings. As party leadership, he chose to bring the motion to vacate up quickly for a vote Tuesday afternoon. U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., will temporarily replace McCarthy in the House leadership position until the full Hou...
